Anavrin Old Shanghai Book Nook Kit Review – A Cozy Street Scene in Miniature

The Old Shanghai Book Nook Kit by Anavrin was sent to me by the brand, but as always, that doesn’t change how I review a kit.

I still build it myself, take my time with the process, and share what stood out: both the good and the small frustrations- in my unbiased reviews.

What drew me to this one was mainly the theme. After building more futuristic or modern book nooks, this design felt softer and more nostalgic.

The idea of a cozy Shanghai street scene with lanterns, tiny shops, and that little tram moving through the setting immediately appealed to me.

What’s inside the box (and what you still need)

The box contains everything you’d expect from a modern Anavrin release: pre-cut wooden sheets, printed elements, acrylic pieces, decorative details, and the full LED lighting setup. The pieces are numbered and pre-colored, which saves a lot of painting time and makes the build flow nicely.

Posters, signage, shop details and layered façade elements give the kit that storytelling feel Anavrin has been leaning into lately.

What you still need yourself is pretty standard:

  • a good crafting glue
  • a craft knife for occasional cleanups,
  • tweezers for the smaller pieces, and
  • something to sand edges if needed.

Nothing unusual, but I would definitely recommend having enough glue nearby because this kit relies on gluing more than some other book nooks I’ve built.

My building experience (step-by-step impressions)

  • A very smooth start

From the first steps, the build flowed nicely. The instruction manual is clear and easy to follow, with logical steps and helpful visuals. I never had that moment of confusion where I needed to jump back and forth between pages.

  • Good material quality throughout

The wooden parts were cleanly cut and fit together well. I didn’t need much sanding or adjusting, which always helps keep the momentum going.

  • Tiny decorative elements require patience

Some pieces are extremely delicate, especially the decorative details that give the street scene its personality. Tweezers and a steady hand definitely came in handy here.
That being said, I only had to replace 1 little piece with a spare one. (yes, some pieces have spares )

  • More gluing than expected

This kit relies quite a bit on glue rather than slot assembly. It didn’t bother me, but it does mean waiting briefly for parts to set and making sure everything is aligned before moving on.

Cute old cart, easily assembled

  • A small obstacle near the end

The only moment that slowed me down was assembling the side panels. Positioning needed a bit of adjustment before everything sat properly, but once that was sorted, the build continued smoothly.

  • Lighting was refreshingly simple

No issues with the LED setup at all. The wiring felt straightforward, everything worked immediately, and installation was beginner-friendly.

  • Finished in under five hours

This ended up being the fastest Anavrin kit I’ve built so far. I was done in less than five hours, which surprised me considering the detailed final result.

  • A warm and cozy final look

The finished scene feels inviting and atmospheric. My favorite detail is the little tram, especially with the front light turned on — it adds movement and really anchors the composition.

  • Lighting accents could be slightly stronger

Some areas, like the shoes on the right side of the book nook, feel a bit underlit compared to the rest of the scene. It’s a small detail, but stronger accents there would have enhanced the storytelling even more.

Pros and cons

Let’s now go over some quick pro’s and cons, in my opinion:

Pros

  • Very smooth and enjoyable build experience
  • Clear and beginner-friendly instruction booklet
  • High material quality with clean, well-fitting parts
  • Warm, cozy design with strong storytelling elements
  • A lighting setup that is easy to install and works immediately
  • The tram detail adds a charming focal point
  • Detailed final result without requiring excessive build time

Cons

  • Some extremely delicate pieces that require patience
  • More gluing than expected, which can slow the rhythm slightly
  • Minor alignment challenge when assembling the side panels
  • Certain decorative elements could benefit from stronger lighting accents

My Final Conclusion

Overall, the Old Shanghai Book Nook by Anavrin was a very enjoyable build and easily the smoothest one I’ve done from the brand so far.
