If you’ve been working with Robotime kits for a while, you may have noticed a change—these kits used to come with a small tube of glue to help with assembly.
I remember this well from my first Robotime project, Cathy’s Flower House. (I wrote an in-depth review of it here). However, it seems like newer Robotime kits are no longer including glue as part of the package.
This can be a bit of a surprise if you’re new to miniature kits, especially if you’re expecting an all-in-one solution.
On the other hand, Cutebee kits—another popular brand—never came with glue in the first place, so this is something to be aware of when comparing the two brands. If you’ve opened your Robotime kit and realized the glue is missing, don’t worry! There are plenty of great alternatives that work just as well, if not better.
Recommended Glues for Robotime Kits
Here are a few types of glue that can help you assemble your kit easily and effectively:
-
Grab Fast Tacky Glue
This is my go-to glue for most miniature projects. It dries quickly, holds securely, and works well on a variety of materials like paper, wood, and fabric. It’s also forgiving, allowing you to adjust pieces slightly before it fully sets. -
Clear-Drying PVA Glue
Standard white glue, often referred to as PVA glue, is another excellent option. Look for one that dries clear to avoid visible residue. This type of glue is versatile and works well for both structural pieces and decorative elements. -
Super Glue (for Plastic or Metal)
For small plastic components or metal embellishments, a tiny drop of super glue can be useful. Be cautious, as it dries very quickly and doesn’t allow for repositioning. -
Gel-Based Glues or Glue Dots
If you prefer a less messy option for attaching lightweight decorative pieces, consider gel-based glues or glue dots. These work well for items like flowers, vases, and other small accessories.
Tips for Glue Application
- Pre-Fit Pieces Before Gluing: Always dry-fit your pieces to ensure proper alignment before applying glue. This avoids unnecessary mess and ensures a cleaner finish.
- Use Tweezers: Handling small parts can be tricky. Tweezers can make positioning more precise and less frustrating.
- Apply Glue Sparingly: A little goes a long way. Excess glue can seep out and be difficult to clean.
- Allow Time to Dry: Let each piece set fully before moving on to the next step. This prevents shifting and ensures a sturdier build.
Final Thoughts
While it’s disappointing that Robotime kits no longer include glue, this change opens the door to using higher-quality adhesives that can enhance your experience and the durability of your project.
