- 56 Conclusion :
To get diorama water effects in the miniature world, you could make them, for sure, the way that I explained it in this long article of mine.
In that article, there are already a few products that you can buy in a craft shop or online, that are being used to create wonderful miniature waterfalls, beaches, or rivers.
But if you really want to be sure of the special effects to create diorama water effects, and it is just easier to do (you don’t need to add acrylic blue paint for example), then there are all sorts of products available on the market for you!
Today I am going to review 5 of them. (from up to 4 stars and more, as usual, we want the best quality)
Product Number 1.
Product Name: Vallejo Transparent Pacific Blue Water Effect
Place(s) To Buy: Amazon
Price : 21,24 dollars
Owners: Vallejo
Vallejo sells all kinds of products to use for diorama’s, like in the War Games world. They sell acrylic paints, mud and sand color sets, varnish, airbrush, snow effect, basically anything you can imagine for dioramas.
The company became the first specialist in acrylic colors, with a long and varied experience in all aspects of this branch of manufacturing.
Overall Rank:
Warranty: not found sorry
Product Overview :
More specific for our water effects, Vallejo has products for all kinds of ‘water’ effects. From still water to waves, ripples, and more.
These pots contain 200 ml’s of a translucent gel in more colors than just Pacific Blue. Colors also available are Atlantic blue and Mediterranean Blue or just transparent water.
The Good And The Bad :
The good:
– not flammable
– does not contain solvents
– does a perfect job on simulating ocean and sea effects
– can be applied with a brush or sponge, so you don’t need any extra materials
– shrinks only a little bit when drying
The bad:
– it might be a disadvantage that the gel dries in 24 hours

My Final Opinion :
Perfect for what it is meant to do and that is create oceans and beaches. To create waterfalls and such, I would recommend their ‘transparent water’ pot off also 200 ml :
Product number 2.
Product Name: Woodland Scenics Realistic Water
Place(s) To Buy: Amazon

Price : 25,79 $
Owners: Woodland Scenics
Overall Rank:
Warranty: not found, contact the seller
Product Overview :
Woodlands Scenics realistic water is used to model still or slow-moving water, such as rivers and ponds and more. Comes in a pot off 473 ml ( odd number if you ask me 😉 ).
The Good And The Bad :
The good :
– self-leveling
– won’t crack
– minimal shrinkage
– dries firm and clear
The bad:
– dries in 24 hours
– stays Tacky for a long time, make sure not to place anything else on your water or it will show prints
Support :
I found a Facebook page and a Twitter page.
My Final Opinion :
This product seems to do a good job, but make sure that it dries very well and it is probably better to just use it for shallow waters only, because than it shrinks too much apparently.
Product number 3.
Product Name: Woodland Scenics 4515 SURFACE WATER – RIPPLES
Place(s) To Buy: Amazon
Price : 16,25 $
Owners: Woodland Scenics
Overall Rank:
Warranty: not found, contact the seller
Product Overview :
Another product from Woodland scenics, but this time to create ripples, which the previous product wasn’t suited for. (there are not many different brands anyway that I can find that sell water effects) . You can create ‘white water’ bye adding some white water highlight.
Comes in a pot off 118 ml.
The Good And The Bad :
The good:
– dries clear
– you can customize the watercolor bye adding food color or a drop off acrylic paint
– applies easily
– price is more than ok
The bad:
– not suitable for rivers
Support :
I found a Facebook page and a Twitter page.
My Final Opinion :
There’s not a lot of experiences I can find about this product, but overall it seems like it is doing a good job in creating ripples in the water.
Product number 4.
Product Name: AKI Diorama Effects – Pacific Blue Water
Place(s) To Buy: Amazon

Price : 25,99 $
Owners: AK Interactive
Overall Rank:
Warranty: not found, contact the seller
Product Overview :
This is an acrylic product developed for extreme realism, more specifically for miniature beaches.
You can achieve the best result with layers of 0.1-3 mm. The gel can be diluted with water or an acrylic thinner to improve fluidity.
Comes in the form of a gel off 250 ml.
The Good And The Bad :
The good :
– Easy to apply
– non-toxic
– a good result in thick or thin layers
– seems cheaper than others
The bad :
– I can not find many reviews on this product, so I can’t be sure about the quality
– 24 hours to dry
Support :
Email adresse : support@ak–interactive
My Final Opinion :
As I said, I can’t seem to find many reviews about this product and not even negative ones. So I can’t be 100% sure if people are happy with this product sorry, but it does seem like a good price, compared to others.
Product number 5.
Product Name: Vallejo Still Water
Place(s) To Buy: Amazon
Price : 15,99$
Owners: Vallejo
Overall Rank:
Warranty: not found, contact the seller
Product Overview :
Another product from Vallejo, but this one is for still water, not for ocean effect as in the first one. In a pot off 30ml or 200 ml
The Good And The Bad :
The good:
– non-toxic
– resistant and permanent finish
– drying time can be quick (45 minutes), but also can last for days, so I’m not sure to put this positive or negative 😉
– easy to use
The bad:
– seems to sometimes give cracks
– quit expensive considering the amount of the pot
Support :
email address: info@acrylicosvallejo.com
their Facebook page: https://www.facebook.com/vallejocolors
My Final Opinion :
I’m not so sure if this one is any good, seeing the price and then 1 guy saying that this product cracked immediately, even after just one layer. But you might have another experience with this product, then please share!
Conclusion :
I was going to review 6 products to create diorama water effects, but I could only find 5 with a few reviews (there’s not a lot off company’s producing these), so it is hard to tell in this article wich to buy to create your miniature water, but I do hope I could help you decide bye providing the pro’s and cons/rates and prices and amounts of gel that you get for that price.
If you have any observations or questions, please do tell in the comments below!
Happy crafting,
Kind regards,
Lizzy
One of the difficulty that it is in buying a commodity is the fact that it has a lot of products from different makers which makes it hard to know which one to buy or not. The water effects products you reviewed here are nice ams it’s really good that you specified the good and bad aspects. Thanks for sharing.
What a gorgeous website you have going here. I have always wanted my own dollhouse, and still do, except now I want to make one, not just play with one. I would love to see some photos of the different types of water effects that these products create, as I am sure it is hard to pick by just reading what the product does. Do you have any completed projects to show us? You have inspired me to go ahead and start building right now, but where to start?
Hello Michel,
Thank you for the compliments. As you can see in this article, there are a few pictures and videos of finished projects 😉 I would really advise you to also read the guidelines before you start your own projects ..
Happy crafting !
Lizzy
PS : you might start with a miniature kit, they are very handy for beginners, to learn the tricks and tips 🙂 I will be finishing ‘Millers’ garden’ from Robotime soon !
