What type of twigs are used for fairy garden furniture - the basic materials?

Twigs are everywhere, but finding the right ones for your fairy garden furniture can be a fun little adventure. Look for straight, sturdy twigs on your nature walks.

Those fallen from trees usually work best since they're already dry, but avoid anything rotting or infested with bugs.

If you want to work with twigs found in nature, you need to clean them well first and let them dry completely. This helps them bond better when you're putting together your tiny fairy furniture.

The actual type of wood can vary, I have used and still am using willow twigs, as they are bendable in certain circumstances.

I remember buying a bundle in the Ikea warehouse at the time, and I still have the bundle, although I already used a lot of it for my treehouse and furniture.

On the other hand, I have seen that twigs for crafting, are usually made from birch twigs, as they are all over Amazon, where you can buy them already cut into pieces:

As for the tools: you’ll need a few basic ones: pruning shears for cutting, sandpaper for smoothing rough edges, and a good glue (like wood glue) for assembly.

Personally, I have used superglue though, cause I didn't feel like first holding pieces together with wire and waiting for it to dry completely to have them stick together.

Do you see my "faucets" made from bent twigs, for my mini kitchen sink, in the picture below? I just had to use superglue for these, I couldn't see any other way.

Neither did the stick, glued to the acorn to create a teapot, stick very well just using wood glue.

But don't forget some twine or thin wire to help secure pieces together when they are drying, if you are going to use that method.

Crafting Techniques: Transforming Twigs into Fairy Furniture

Let's jump into the fun part – making the actual fairy garden furniture!

Start with a plan.

Sketch some quick designs for chairs, tables, or benches. Keep it simple; fairy furniture is all about whimsy and charm, not perfection.

Create a basic fairy chair with twigs:

• Cut four similar-sized twigs for the seat and glue them together to make a square (3cms x 3cms).
  
• Cut them to size using your pruning shears or use a table saw if you have health issues with your hands.
  
• The front legs are, in my case, 3 cm each and the back legs are 8 cm high.
  
• Cut a few more extra sticks, to form the seat and use some finer twigs and greeneries as decoration.
  
• Sand the edges to avoid any splinters.
  

Using strong wood glue (or super glue as I did), attach the seat twigs to the legs.

Let them dry completely before moving on to the backrest and make sure everything feels sturdy before moving on.

The chairs that I created are for a scale about 1:12.

Create a basic fairy garden bunk bed.

I made my own miniature bunk bed from scratch with twigs and mostly waste materials.

There's something about creating miniatures from trash or everyday items that is so fulfilling and after some time, you get 'the eye' for using these materials :-)

For this little bed, the frame is made from willow twigs, feathers, a sponge, cotton balls, cardboard, and pieces from an old scarf that I wasn't wearing anymore.

Creating a fairy garden bookshelf with twigs and bark.

Basically, to create a miniature bookshelf for your fairy garden using twigs and bark, again you should have a plan, get straight twigs and flat pieces of bark, and cut the twigs to size.

You need three vertical supports of bark, horizontal supports for the shelves, and top and bottom support.

Sand the ends for a smooth finish, then assemble the frame by gluing the horizontal supports between the vertical supports and adding the side supports for stability.

Then just decorate the whole thing with twigs and greeneries, and you're done!

Making fairy garden furniture, a few more tips and hints.

• Just gluing twigs together can be hard, in that case using twine or thin wire wrapped around the joints adds both stability and a rustic look. You might need a bit of patience here, but it’s worth it.
  

• Adding details can make your pieces special. Use smaller twigs, bark, or even tiny pine cones to decorate. Moss and pebbles can create cushions or tabletops. Get creative! Paint can also add a pop of color if you like.
  

• If you are going to place your fairy furniture outside, you need to think about durability.
  
  If fairy furniture is outdoors, waterproofing is key. A clear sealant helps protect your creations from the elements, so they can charm your garden all year round.
