If you’re working on a dollhouse project and want custom wallpaper scaled to 1:12, there are multiple ways to create your designs.

Let’s explore four methods: using Canva/finding patterns on websites, using scrapbook paper, using AI tools (yes, yes, I know you hate it: but listen!), and creating dollhouse wallpaper directly in Canva.

Method 1: Step-by-Step Tutorial with Canva

This method walks you through creating your own custom wallpaper using Canva, a free design tool that’s easy to use and offers full control over your design’s size and style.

Step 1: Choose a Wallpaper Design

For my project, I found a great selection of Wallpaper from the 70s, but you can use any high-quality wallpaper images on any other (real) wallpaper website that you love. (I'm pretty sure there are no copyright issues involved here for dollhouses)

Look for patterns with a repeating design, as this ensures it will work seamlessly when scaled down for a dollhouse. Once you’ve chosen your design, download the image to your computer.

Let's for example pick this simple wallpaper pattern, I dig it!

This one is saved as a jpeg, but it doesn't really matter in what extension it's saved.

Step 2: Prepare the Image in Canva

Open Canva.com with a regular page ( or look for an A4 document). Upload the wallpaper image onto the page.

To create a repeating pattern, shrink the image by dragging its corner handles. Once resized, move the image to the top-left corner of the Canva workspace.

Next, copy and paste the image, positioning each copy right next to the other until you create a seamless repeat.

You might need to zoom in to ensure that the images align properly and that no gaps or overlaps occur between the copies.

After tiling two or more images, group them together to make the process easier as you fill the workspace with the repeated design.

Keep repeating this process until the page is filled with the wallpaper pattern.

Step 3: Get the Scale Right

Now that your wallpaper is tiled and ready, it’s time to ensure that it’s scaled correctly for your dollhouse. To get the perfect scale:

1. Resizing the Pattern: Zoom in or out on the design until it fills an A4 page. Use Canva’s corner handles to adjust the design so that several repeats fit across the page. The smaller the design, the better it fits the 1:12 scale.
   
   
2. Testing the Scale: To make sure the design is accurately scaled for your dollhouse, trace the dominant shapes of the pattern onto an A4 piece of tracing paper.
   
   Cut out the traced shapes and place them on your dollhouse walls to see how they look or use tracing paper. If the pattern seems too large or too small, return to Canva and adjust the size accordingly.
   
   Unfortunately, it is a bit of a question of trying and fitting to see if the pattern suits your dollhouse walls, even more for smaller scales like on a scale of 1:24.

Step 4: Print and Apply

Once you’re happy with the size, download the final design as a PDF or PNG for high-quality printing. Choose a good paper type—glossy or matte, depending on the look you want—and print your wallpaper at home or at a local print shop.

After printing, carefully cut the wallpaper to fit your dollhouse walls and use PVA glue to apply it. Smooth out any air bubbles or creases to ensure a clean finish.

This method gives you full control over your design and allows you to create a completely customized look for your miniature home.

Method 2: Use Scrapbook Paper

Another simple method to create dollhouse wallpaper is using scrapbook paper, as described in a tutorial on Life in Mini.

Scrapbook paper comes in various designs and textures, making it perfect for dollhouse interiors. Just choose a design you love, cut it to fit your walls, and apply it with glue or double-sided tape.

This method is affordable and quick, and you can find a wide range of patterns in most craft stores.

Method 3: AI-generated wallpaper with DALL-E

For those who want unique wallpaper styles, AI tools like DALL-E can generate stunning 1:12 scale designs.

Using AI in the dollhouse world, Lizzy, really? I can just hear you saying it, hahaha!

But listen: to create wallpaper printables: the possibilities are endless! And I have been experimenting a little with this, because why not? It can give fantastic results, you just need to use the correct 'language', aka prompts.

Go to ChatGPT, and open DALL-E.

Here are 10 prompts you can use for different styles of wallpaper, make sure the result shows you a recurrent pattern, because it can sometimes 'hallucinate':

1. Victorian Floral: "Design a 1:12 scale dollhouse wallpaper with intricate Victorian floral motifs in pastel tones. Use recurrent patterns, and realistic.
   
   
2. Mid-Century Modern: "Create a 1:12 scale wallpaper with bold geometric shapes in retro colors like mustard yellow and teal. Use recurrent patterns, and realistic.
   
   
3. Cottagecore: "Generate a 1:12 scale wallpaper with delicate wildflowers and soft earthy tones like sage green. Use recurrent patterns, and realistic.

She begins by creating a blank A4 document and choosing patterns or graphics from Canva’s “Elements” section.

She then selects a pattern, such as cars or flowers, aligns it to the top-left corner, and resizes it. To fill the page, she copies and pastes the pattern repeatedly until the entire A4 sheet is covered.

Once complete, she downloads the image as a high-quality PNG file and prints it on cardstock for easy cutting and installation in her dollhouse.
